Worming Your Pet

Your dog or cat can be infected with worms. There are two main types of these internal parasites; roundworms and tapeworms. Regular worming of your dog or cat is important for two reasons. Firstly, certain types of roundworm can cause health problems in people if they become infected. This is especially important in children as they are at a higher risk of becoming infected. Secondly, infection of your pet with worms may cause disease with symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting, anaemia and weight loss.

Dogs
Puppies and adult dogs should all be regularly wormed to treat and help prevent infection by worms. Puppies can be wormed from 2 weeks old and should have been wormed by the breeder. Your puppy should then be wormed every 4 weeks until they are 6 months old. Thereafter, your pet should be wormed every 3 months. However, some dogs are at a higher risk of becoming infected with worms and require more regular worming. Worming regimes may vary depending on the product used. Please feel free to talk to one of our vets for advice regarding how frequently your pet needs worming and which wormer to use. It is also important to treat your dog regularly for fleas as this is the commonest source of tapeworm infection.

Working Dogs
Working dogs and dogs housed in kennels are also at risk of infection with hookworms, whipworms and lungworms. Infection with these worms can be treated and prevented by regular worming. Ask our vets if you feel your pet is at risk from these worms. Your dog is also at risk of infection with other types of worms, including heartworm, if you take your dog abroad. We can advise you on how to protect your dog on holiday against these worms.

Cats
All kittens and cats should be regularly wormed to treat and prevent infection with tapeworms and roundworms. Worming will also help prevent disease caused by lungworms. Kittens can be wormed from 6 weeks old and should have been treated by the breeder. Your kitten needs to be wormed every 4 weeks until they are 6 months old. Your pet should then be wormed every 3 months. If your cat hunts then you may need to worm him or her more frequently. It is also important to treat your cat regularly for fleas as this is a common source of tapeworm infection. Many owners find it impossible to give their cats tablets. Regular worming can be achieved by using a spot-on preparation applied to the skin on the back of the neck. Please feel free to ask us about all types of worming products.
